Zoe Cormier is a freelance writer who specializes in science, environmental and health-related stories. She is the author of The Green Report, a digest of environmental news and trends, published in The Globe and Mail - Canada's largest national newspaper - twice monthly. Her work has also been featured in such publications as The Toronto Star, Canada's largest daily, Shameless, the world's first mainstream feminist mag for teens, and The Ecologist, the UK's oldest environmental magazine.
Her work has taken her to one of the most polluted native reserves in Canada, to a rehabilitative facility where paraplegics are learning to walk again, and to an exclusive interview with Dr. Jane Goodall. She has been nominated twice for the Canadian National Magazine Awards: her 2005 cover story on vaginal plastic surgery for Shameless, and her 2006 cover story for This Magazine on climate change spin doctoring, were both shortlisted for the NMAs. The latter piece was made required reading for a University of Toronto course on environmental policy.
She holds an Honours B.Sc. in zoology from the University of Toronto, which she received with high distinction in 2005 (equivalent to a 1st in the UK system). She studied all aspects of biology from genetics to physiology to behaviour and climate change - making her one of a small number of scientifically literate journalists.
From 2003 to 2005 she held the position of Science Editor at The Varsity - one of the oldest student papers in Canada, and the former home to such writers as Naomi Klein, Peter Gzowski and Clive Thompson.
Born and raised in the east end of Toronto, in between Chinatown and Indiatown, Zoe now lives in London, England.
